Research Sites

Elf_sites.jpg

During the February workshop, participants agreed on a shortlist of sites to test the methodologies and tools [see notes from the initial discussions]:

Initial Discussions

Within value chain – how do we select sites?

How many? Will FEAST, Techfit, VCA be done in each point within sites?
FEAST/Techfit at each site but maybe VCA only in one site.

What gradient?
High potential vs. low potential
Within each of these, one close to town, one far from town.
High productivity potential vs low productivity potential (confounded with market access)

Sites Selected

Beef
1. Arsi Negelle (low potential)
a. One woreda: ???
b. 2 kebeles: one close to town (atela), one far from town (straw)
2. Wonago (Gedio zone; high potential) - in consultation with Solomon and Adissu (23/3/12) we subsequently agreed that for logistical reasons the high potential site would be Adama.
a. One woreda: ???
b. 2 kebeles: one close to town, one far from town

Dairy
1. Holleta: wheat, teff, faba bean, x-bred cattle (more cropping potential) – good market access
a. One woreda: ???
b. 2 kebeles: one close to town (cross-bred), one far from town (local cows)
2. Mukaturi/Debretsige: barley, oats, x-bred cattle – poor market access
a. One woreda: ???
b. 2 kebeles: one close to town (cross-bred), one far from town (local cows)

Sheep
1. Debre Berhan: barley, pulse, wheat
a. Select one woreda (Debre Berhan/Zuria woreda?)
b. Two kebebes: one close to town, one far from town (contrasting cropping systems)
2. Menz: communal resources, marginal barley
a. Select one woreda (????)
b. Two kebebes: one close to town, one far from town
